Reading is for Rich People

One of my all time favorite funny movies is the latest making of the Longest Yard with Adam Sandler and Chris Rock. At one point in the movie Chris Rock’s character Caretaker drops the line “reading is for rich people.”

It’s interesting that such a line can be profound in so many ways. In the case of the movie, it’s in regards to education being affected by race and socio-economic class. That said, it got me also thinking about us as Christians. See I have been brought up and firmly believe that there is a vast wealth, a richness to be had when we read.

This is something that I have come to greatly admire in the mature Christians that I know. They have this constant hunger not only to be in God’s Word but to also read a wide range of books, blogs, newspapers etc. They do this because they desire to keep learning, growing and be up to date with the different issues that face the church.

I have found the one thing that helps me to keep up to date with pretty much everything and provides for a rich and challenging read are the 50 or so blogs that I’m subscribed to.

With that in mind, I thought I’d share 11 of my most favorite blogs. These blogs have challenged and richly blessed me over the last little while. I hope they can do the same for you. Enjoy!

Instead, variants of the serpent’s question to Eve—”Did God really say?” are floated, as if somehow this case might be eligible for an exemption, considering how much they love each other, how the unbeliever supports and understands the Christian’s faith, how they are soul-mates despite the absence of a shared soul-faith.

Russell Moore answers the question “Should I marry a man with pornography struggles?”

Struggling with infertility? Here are some good thoughts by Courtney Reissig on the Gospel Coalition blog:

Don’t Waste Your Infertility:

I wish I could say that my response to this news has always been Christ-like and admirable. It hasn’t. But through this trial, God has taught me some specific things about his character, my depravity, and his goodness in all things. I believe that God is absolutely sovereign over my infertility in the same way that I believe he was sovereign over my miscarriage. It was not a surprise to him. In fact, it was designed by him for my good, and he doesn’t want me to waste this suffering. What I’ve learned is hardly exhaustive, but it’s a start. If you are struggling with infertility, too, I pray that God uses these words to encourage you as we walk this road together.
