Celebrating the Good, not Mourning the Bad

Why do we always fixate on the ministries that are struggling or just don’t work? Why do we mourn some ministries while neglecting to celebrate and give thanks for those that are doing well? These are some of the questions that I have been asking recently as we work at overhauling some of the ministries at the church.

For example, the Grades 4-6 ministry, Jr High, College & Career, Young Marrieds and ESL are all doing well. We are not only seeing the numerical growth (which I give little clout to) but also depth and spiritual growth. Great things are happening but we do little to celebrate. On the other hand, the senior high ministry is struggling as well as our overall Sunday morning attendance. But these have taken a lot of the focus in the majority of discussion throughout the church – both on the leadership and congregational side of things. I’m not saying these ministries aren’t important – they very much are – but are we loosing our way by fixating so much on them? Why mourn when we can celebrate? God is at work in the church. He is doing some remarkable things in the lives of His people but we offer little in the way of praise for it.

What do people think? How have you experienced and dealt with this in your church? Or am I just off my rocker!
